How to keep your kitchen sink drain clean

The secret to not getting a blocked kitchen sink drain is here. Firstly, it is important to understand what causes blocked or smelly drains. This can be caused by things such as hair, coffee grinds, soap scum and kitchen fat.  Some other food items that can clog drains are banana peels, potato peels and any other type of vegetable or fruit peels can get lodged and cause clogs in your drain pipes.
Blocked drains can end up being costly if left for too long and not to mention smelly!  Being aware of all the possible problems is half of the battle. This article should arm you with the knowledge you need to start using more caution when you wash dishes and help you reduce the chance of a blocked drain.

Step 1:

Firstly, use a drain screen – that little metal plug that catches all the scraps from plates – it will ensure food particles are trapped and able to be easily thrown away.

Step 2:

Secondly, avoid pouring fats and oils down the sink.  Instead collect them in a container and allow them to cool and then dispose of them.

Tip:

A little trick I use is putting the plug in the sink and filling with boiling water.  I use a pair of tongs to lift the plug and allow the boiling water to wash through the drain to give it a good rinse.
