As plumbing professionals, we often encounter unexpected challenges, and our recent call-out to a new homeowner’s property was no exception. In our latest YouTube video, we take you along on a journey to tackle a blocked drain that quickly turned from a potential delight into a bit of a disaster.
Our client, Ron, had only been living in his new home for less than a week when he discovered a blocked drain. As we always do, we approached the situation with caution and hope, crossing our fingers that Ron hadn’t unknowingly walked into a major sewage problem left behind by the previous owners.
Upon arrival, we conducted our initial investigation using our state-of-the-art CCTV camera. What we found was a mix of toilet paper and what appeared to be tree roots—unless, as we jokingly suggested, a gorilla had been shaving in the house!
To address the blockage, we brought out our high-pressure water jetter. This powerful tool is often our go-to solution for stubborn clogs and root intrusions. After some detective work to locate the best access point, we found a square junction that allowed us to navigate our equipment effectively.
As we worked our way through the pipes, we encountered significant root growth mixed with accumulated toilet paper. This combination had created a formidable blockage, explaining why the drain had been slowly deteriorating. We also discovered an offset in the pipe, which had likely contributed to the problem by creating a weak point for root intrusion.
While we successfully cleared the immediate blockage, providing relief for Ron, we also identified a long-term solution. The affected section of pipe would benefit from relining—a process where we insert a new pipe within the existing one, effectively sealing off any entry points for roots and preventing future blockages.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough inspections when purchasing a new property. Hidden plumbing issues can sometimes be overlooked during the excitement of moving into a new home.
At Turbo Plumbing Solutions, we’re committed to not just solving immediate problems but also providing our clients with the knowledge and options for long-term solutions.
